How to Optimize Your Website on Google in 2014

Since Google continues to update and change its algorithm, website owners also have to constantly update their pages to stay in the game. Last September 2013, Google launched “Hummingbird,” its latest search algorithm. In order to let your website stay relevant on Google search, here are a few SEO strategies that you can employ.

1.Keywords still matter—but keep it conversational.

With Hummingbird, it’s better to use keywords that sound and feel conversational. Don’t pad your content with keywords if it doesn’t feel natural. Also try to understand your reader’s intentions to map your site’s architecture and content.

2.Quality content and authorship.

It’s no surprise that your website should have quality content. But in 2014, it’s important to also have an author to go with it. With Google authorship, when a user finds content from your website on the Google search results, it will also have a name and a picture that indicates who wrote the content. Search results that have authors show Google, as well as its users, that the result is relevant and trustworthy, therefore encouraging more clicks.

3.Structure information.

According to Google, “If Google understands the content on your pages, we can create rich snippets—detailed information intended to help users with specific queries.” If you organize your content and structure information in such a way that Google understands, snippets of information from your site will appear on Google search results, helping users know that what your page offers is relevant to what they’re looking for. Google recommends that you use microdata to your site in order to make this work.

4. Use social media.

Social media has become one of the indicators that you provide quality content. If your site gets a lot of +1s on Google+, then it can correlate to higher search rankings. If your content is also shared on social media channels regularly, it is also a factor that you provide quality.

5. Improve user experience on mobile.

Improving user experience should be at the heart of everyone who wants their website to rank well. And in recent years, it’s become increasingly important to have a website that looks and functions well on mobile. Because more and more people are starting to use smartphones and tablets rather to browse the Internet rather than desktops and laptops, try to design your website in such a way that it’s friendly for mobile users.
